Keep Up Regular Lawn Care and Maintenance During Spring & Summer

The first thing you need to remember about maintaining a great lawn all year long is to do proper maintenance during the spring and summer. During the spring, your lawn will be growing at the fastest rate of the year due to the abundance of water and the ideal growing temperatures. However, it’s not just your lawn that will be growing. Weeds will be growing quickly as well, which is why you need to perform regular maintenance to ensure your lawn stays looking great all year long. This includes mowing the lawn, weeding, border edging sidewalks and driveways, and cleaning hard surfaces like driveways and walkways.

Provide the Nutrients Your Lawn Needs Year-Round

It is also important to ensure that your lawn has the nutrients it needs to grow properly all year long. After the cold winter, your grass and plants will need essential nutrients to grow. These include nitrogen, phosphorous, iron, and potassium. These nutrients are found in fertilizer and help encourage strong roots and plant growth. During the spring, choose an organic, slow-release fertilizer that will not burn your lawn and spread it according to the manufacturer’s directions. If you’re very particular about your lawn, you can hire a lawn care company to spray the appropriate nutrients.

Take Care of Weeds in Your Lawn

If you want to keep your lawn looking fabulous all year long, you also need to be concerned with weeds. When your grass is growing quickly, so are weeds. This is especially true during the spring months when growing conditions are optimal. Having a green lawn is great, but chances are that you want it to be comprised of grass and not weeds. That is why you should act quickly in the spring to prevent excessive weed growth. To do this, there are two steps. In early spring, apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the lawn to prevent weeds from even starting. Then, in late spring, apply a post-emergent herbicide to the grass to control any grassy weeds or broadleaf that tends to pop up in the summer.

Water Your Lawn When Necessary

While your lawn typically stays nice and green through spring and early summer, it can turn yellow and brown later in the season due to lack of water. As a general rule, your lawn really needs an inch of water every week to stay a healthy green color. If there isn’t rain in the forecast, you should water the yard yourself. Use long, infrequent watering instead of short, frequent applications because the former promotes stronger and deeper root systems. During the summer months, you should try to water early in the morning and late in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler, and the yard isn’t as likely to dry out as quickly. Typically, between 6 am and 10 am and 4 pm and 7 pm are the best times of day to water your lawn in the summer.

Partake in Spring and Fall Yard Cleanup

Something that many people fail to recognize is that a healthy lawn doesn’t start in the spring. In fact, if you neglect your lawn after the summer months that can have a devastating effect on your yard. That’s because both fall and spring cleanups are essential. It is essential to rake up leaves, get rid of debris, and deadhead your plants before winter hits. Then, in the spring, you should also perform some cleanup to remove dead leaves and debris that might have blown into your yard. Piles of wet leaves and other debris can smother your lawn and will lead to muddy bare spots in your lawn if left unattended.

Reseed Your Lawn During the Spring or Early Fall

If you are looking to reseed your lawn, it is best to do it in spring or early fall. That is because temperatures are cooler and there is typically adequate rainfall. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for the grass seed when you reseed your lawn and ensure that you adhere to their requirements for temperatures and watering.

Aerate Your Lawn

If you want to keep your yard in tip-top shape all year round you should also consider aerating your lawn. This is best done in the fall as it prevents soil compaction due to the weight of the snow in the winter. Lawn aeration involves punching small holes in the soil and is great for letting soil and grass roots get more oxygen, fertilizer, and water during the cold winter. You can either use a fork or a mechanical aerator, but for the best results, you should use an experienced lawn care company.
